Disc Brake front wheel, front, for Lambretta 125 LI/LIS/DL/GP for Lambretta 125 LI/LIS/DL/GP/150 LI/LIS/DL/GP, for drum brake Forklinks silver, for a better drivability For race use only. Not admitted in the area of the German StVZO! Probably the most well-known technical detail that ever graced a Lambretta was the disc brake. Innocenti were the first company ever to factory equip a production two-wheeler as standard with this modern technology. Regrettably the first disc brake system was not quite as developed as modern day items, but can most certainly be considered as an important and necessary step in the right direction. They were still cable-operated, instead of a much more efficient hydraulic system which already saw use on the versions found on the cars of the day. The braking forces were still directed through the forks in the same way as with the drum brakes. This leads to the increased braking performance causing the forks to bottom-out during hard deceleration, leaving no reserve for the springs to serve as a suspension over uneven surfaces. Nowadays there are numerous aftermarket brake system upgrades available for Lambretta scooters. Any model that was originally produced with a drum brake up front can now be upgraded to a disc brake system. A model with an original disc brake type can be fitted with a hydraulic operation system. An externally mounted type with more performance is also possible. Finally, there are also external brake systems incorporating an anti-dive mechanism that prevents extreme fork spring compression during braking. Each different disc brake system presents their own different advantages: A reproduction of the original brake type remains unobtrusive within the elegant vintage air of the Lambretta. A hydraulic conversion improves the braking performance considerably without becoming too obtrusive. Externally mounted types enable larger diameter discs to be fitted, also leaving enough space for larger dimensioned brake callipers. This allows a noticeably stronger deceleration to be easily achieved. External disc brakes with an anti-dive mechanism included represent an enormous improval in suspension performance during heavy braking. Whether the system is equipped with modifications or not, the matter of its compatibility with the Lambretta model to be upgraded is decided by two factors:Drum braked and disc braked models have different fork link types mounted. Luckily, most disc brake conversion kits can cater for both types. If you wish to include a fully hydraulically operated system to a scooter a BMC (Brake Master Cylinder) is also required. To enable its fitting many kits include a special dedicated bracket for the brake lever, normally also containing the light switch. These adapters are different for each type. In principal it is almost always possible, with certain modifications, to exchange the brake discs between these models: 125 LI/LIS/DL/GP/150 LI/LIS/SX/DL/GP 175 TV series II & III/ 200 TV/SX/DL/GP. We always include the scooter models specification for which each particular type is meant in the delivery, according to the fork links and brake stabiliser fitted. Conclusion: A disc brake system represents a modern upgrade providing a huge increase in riding safety and enjoyment while riding your vintage scooter!
